70/30 vs. 80/20 VG/PG Cloud Production

There are some vapers who are just looking for the easiest way to get their nicotine fix, and then there are cloud chasers. If you belong to the latter category, you know the great lengths that you can go to in order to ensure that those clouds are as big and fluffy as can be. There’s something uniquely satisfying about watching those plumes of luscious vapor flowing from the lips, and there many adjustments that one can make to their vaping setup in order to accommodate this.

One of the biggest factors that comes into play with chasing clouds is the ratio of vegetable glycerin (VG) to propylene glycol (PG). As most of us know, e-liquids all contain a base of vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol that is combined with the nicotine and the flavoring extracts. But, the ratio of vegetable glycerin to propylene glycol varies, and choosing the right ratio is important if you want to take your clouds to the next level.

The two most popular ratios are 80/20 and 70/30. While you may think that they are basically the same, that’s simply not true. So, which ratio is better for chasing clouds? We’ll be answering that question, but first, let’s talk about what that ratio means and what these ingredients do.

What’s Vegetable Glycerin (VG)?

Vegetable glycerin (VG) is a thick, viscous substance that is derived from plant material. It can be found in many cosmetics and food items, and it has a slightly sweet taste. Because of its thickness, it makes e-liquid thicker. The thicker the liquid, the thicker the clouds, which is why vape juices that have more VG are preferred among cloud chasers.

What’s Propylene Glycol (PG)?

Propylene glycol (PG) is the other ingredient that makes up an e-liquid’s base, and it’s much thinner than vegetable glycerin. Propylene glycol is an alcohol-derived ingredient that is also found in many cosmetics and food items. Because it’s thinner than vegetable glycerin, the more propylene glycol that’s present in a liquid, the thinner it’s consistency. Therefore, the more PG in an e-juice, the thinner the clouds will be as well.

Which Ratio is Better for Chasing Those Clouds?

Like we said, the more vegetable glycerin in an e-liquid, the thicker the clouds will be. This is because VG is thicker, and so the clouds are denser as a result. This means that an 80/20 ratio of VG/PG is going to give you bigger clouds than a 70/30 VG/PG ratio.

So, if 80/20 VG/PG ratios give you bigger, fluffier fog, why do ratios exist that have less VG? Well, not every vaper likes to chase clouds. The juices with higher PG levels have some benefits as well. For instance, higher PG e-liquids provide a stronger flavor because of the way in which this ingredient carries flavor molecules. Additionally, the more PG, the stronger the throat hit. The throat hit is that feeling of vapor slapping the back of the throat, and many vapers crave it because it reminds them of the feeling of inhaling cigarette smoke.

Still, if chasing clouds is what you’re all about, you always want to opt for the highest VG amount available. In fact, some e-liquid manufacturers make max VG vape juices, which are vape juices that contain as much vegetable glycerin as possible.

Other Factors That Affect Your Clouds

Besides the VG/PG ratio, there are other factors that can aid in better fog production.

Nicotine Strength

The lower the nicotine strength, the larger and thicker your clouds will be. This is because nicotine, by nature, weighs down an e-liquid formula, causing the clouds to become thinner.

Coil

The coil that you use also has a lot to do with the size and density of your clouds. After all, the coil determines how the e-liquid is turned into vapor, because it heats the vape juice. So, choosing the right coil also has a lot to do with whether or not you’ll get those beautiful clouds that dreams are made of.

Your Device

Lastly, your device largely determines the clouds that you’ll get when you vape. Basically, high-wattage devices are the way to go, as they allow a lot of e-liquid to be vaporized at one time. The more liquid that’s vaporized per hit, the more vapor will be produced, which means your clouds will be larger.

It’s All About Ratio Preference

The ratio of your e-juice has a lot to do with whether or not you’ll get to enjoy those massive, fluffy clouds when you exhale. That’s why choosing your ratio requires a good deal of consideration. Now that you know which ratio will more likely make your cloud-chasing dreams come true, you can pick out the right juices based on the amount of vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol.
